Adobe recently unveiled a wave of updates to its Firefly family of AI models, alongside new tools and integrations aimed at boosting creative workflows. The announcements came during Adobe MAX 2025 in London, emphasizing the company's commitment to blending AI with human creativity, rather than replacing it.

New Firefly Image Models

A key highlight is the launch of Firefly Image Model 4 and its more powerful sibling, Firefly Image Model 4 Ultra. These models promise improvements in image quality, speed, and control over aspects like style, format, and camera angles. Model 4 can generate images up to 2K resolution, while Model 4 Ultra excels at rendering complex scenes with fine details. Adobe achieved these enhancements through significantly increased computing power during model training, alongside better text generation within images and the ability for users to influence output based on chosen image styles.

Expanding Visual Creation: Video and Vectors

The Firefly Video Model, previously in limited beta, is now generally available to all users. It empowers users to create video clips from text prompts or images, offering control over camera angles, shot timing, atmospheric elements, and motion design. Videos can be generated at resolutions up to 1080p. Complementing these, the Firefly Vector Model is designed for creating editable vector-based artwork, ideal for logos, packaging, icons, and patterns to name a few.

A Hub for AI: The Firefly Web App & Boards

Adobe is consolidating access to its AI models – and those of its competitors – within a redesigned Firefly web app. This hub currently includes models from OpenAI (GPT image generation), Google (Imagen 3 and Veo 2), and Flux (Flux 1.1 Pro), with the promise of more integrations to come. A cornerstone of this approach is content credentials, ensuring that generated images have a clear record of their origin. A new collaborative tool called Firefly Boards, described as an AI-first moodboarding app, is now available in public beta. It's designed to facilitate ideation, remixing, and collaboration, functioning similarly to tools like Visual Electric, Cove, or Kosmik.

Mobile Access on the Horizon

Adobe is also developing a dedicated Firefly mobile app for iOS and Android, signaling a vision to provide creative tools to users on the go. This application could, for example, allow a user to prototype ad campaign ideas during their commute. While a specific launch date hasn't been announced, the development underscores Adobe's ambition to make AI-powered creativity accessible anywhere.

Integration into Creative Cloud & New APIs

These new AI models are slated for integration into Adobe’s established Creative Cloud suite, however, a timeline for that rollout hasn't been provided. Furthermore, Adobe is making its Text-to-Image and Avatar APIs generally available, with a Text-to-Video API entering beta. These APIs are offered through the Firefly Services collection.

Creative Cloud Updates

Alongside Firefly’s advancements, Adobe’s Creative Cloud apps are also receiving updates.

  • Illustrator: Generative shape fill and text-to-pattern tools are now generally available.
  • Photoshop: Features like improved 'Select Details' (for hair, clothing, etc.), 'Adjust Colors', and a reimagined Actions panel with AI-powered suggestions.
  • Premiere Pro: The Firefly-powered Generative Extend feature, now generally available, supports 4K and vertical video. Media Intelligence for fast clip finding, and Caption Translation supporting 27 languages have been released.

Content Authenticity and Ethical Considerations

Recognizing the increasing importance of digital authenticity, Adobe has launched a free Content Authenticity app in public beta. This app allows creators to add digital signatures to images, verifying ownership, authenticity, and the date/time of creation along with edit history. It’s a proactive step in safeguarding creator rights in an age increasingly dominated by AI-generated content. Creators will also be able to set preferences for how Adobe uses their content for AI training.

Partnership Even With Competition

Adobe doesn't view competition from companies like OpenAI and Runway as a threat but as an opportunity. They are even partnering with these competitors. Adobe has integrated competitor AI models such as OpenAI's GPT image model, and Google’s Imagen 3 and Veo 2 into the Firefly web app. Content made from these 3rd party AI models are specifically labeled for experimentation, and Adobe’s models are denoted as “commercially safe.”
